Granite Paving Technical Submittals: ASTM C615 and EN 1341

A granite paving submittal should do more than identify a colour and finish. It should connect the project drawing, material source, production dimensions, finish sample, test evidence, packing plan and approval status to the same proposed supply. That traceable chain is what allows a designer, contractor and supplier to discuss the same material.

This guide explains how to organise that chain when a project refers to ASTM C615/C615M, EN 1341 or a project-specific natural-stone specification. It is a procurement framework, not a declaration that every granite product meets either standard. Compliance must be checked against the edition named by the project and evidence for the proposed stone, finish and production batch.

What ASTM C615/C615M and EN 1341 cover

ASTM C615/C615M is a material specification for granite dimension stone used in applications that include paving, kerbs and landscape features. The ASTM overview identifies physical properties such as absorption, density, compressive strength, modulus of rupture, abrasion resistance and flexural strength.

EN 1341 addresses natural-stone slabs for external paving and the associated performance requirements and test methods. It belongs to a European paving-unit framework and should be read with the project specification and destination requirements.

The two standards are not interchangeable labels. A buyer should first identify which standard, edition and declared characteristics the contract requires, then ask for the corresponding evidence. Avoid requesting “all certificates”: that phrase is difficult to price, difficult to audit and may produce documents unrelated to the proposed material.

Build a one-page submittal register

Before collecting certificates, create a register that ties each required item to a document number and approval status.

Step 1: lock the project application

Record whether the units are for pedestrian paving, steps, a driveway, plaza, pool surround, kerb interface or another location. Note wet exposure, de-icing salts, freeze–thaw conditions, expected traffic and local accessibility requirements. These conditions determine which characteristics require review; they do not automatically select a thickness or prove suitability.

Where structural capacity, movement, drainage or accessibility is involved, the project designer’s requirements control. The supplier should not infer engineering criteria from a marketing photograph.

Step 2: connect the stone source to the evidence

Natural granite varies. The submittal should identify the proposed source and explain how the control sample, current slab or block images, test reports and production lot relate to it. Check the report’s material description, source, sample date, laboratory, test method and reported unit. A report for a similarly named stone is not automatically evidence for the proposed supply.

If a project needs independent sampling or inspection, agree who selects the sample, where it is taken and how it is sealed. Supplier-selected reference samples and independent project samples serve different purposes and should be labelled accordingly.

Step 3: define geometry and visible workmanship

Issue a size schedule rather than a single nominal dimension. Include length, width, thickness, tolerance, edge finish, arrises, chamfers, grooves, holes, curved pieces and visible returns. State which face is the wearing surface and which edges will remain visible after installation.

For modular layouts, add a drawing showing the joint pattern and item references. For steps or kerbs, identify tread, riser, exposed ends and interfaces. This turns a visual request into something production and inspection teams can measure.

Step 4: approve appearance without hiding natural variation

A small control sample cannot represent an entire quarry lot. Define whether approval concerns colour family, mineral movement, finish texture, workmanship or all four. When appearance is important, use a representative range rather than a single “perfect” piece, and record unacceptable defects separately from normal geological variation.

Finish names such as flamed or bush-hammered describe processing, not a guaranteed slip result. If slip resistance is required, state the destination test method, condition and acceptance criterion, then request evidence for the relevant finish.

Step 5: map each performance requirement to evidence

Use a requirement matrix. Do not copy a list of ASTM or EN characteristics into every project without checking the contract.

Is the edition correct? Use the standard edition named in the contract or approved substitution process.
Are units and conditions clear? Check reported units, specimen condition, orientation and finish where relevant.
Is the report current enough? Follow the project’s validity, retesting and change-control requirements.

Step 6: add packing and traceability before approval

Link crate numbers to the item schedule so received material can be checked against the approved submittal. The packing proposal should identify protection between finished faces, edge protection, moisture considerations, package dimensions, handling points and expected gross weight. Final values must come from the actual order and packing list, not a generic product page.

Common submittal failures

  • A test report is supplied without a traceable link to the proposed stone.
  • The finish is shown on the top face but visible edges are not defined.
  • A single sample is treated as the full allowable natural range.
  • Nominal sizes are approved without tolerances or special-piece drawings.
  • A standard number is listed without the required characteristic, edition or acceptance criterion.
  • Packing is discussed after approval, even though crate limits can affect module planning and freight.

  1. Send the drawing, item schedule and application conditions.
  2. Name the governing specification, standard edition and required characteristics.
  3. Define stone identity, finish, dimensions, tolerances and visible edges.
  4. State the sample and approval process.
  5. List required reports, inspection and traceability records.
  6. Provide quantity, destination and delivery constraints for a packing review.
